That's sad Sad

I did't loose any pics, they are all saved on my hard disc, but brickshelf was one of my favourite pages, I've been visiting it very often during many years.

Don't want to freak you out or anything, but do we know that Kevin is alive?

I mean sometimes people die, or he might have lost a loved one and that can break a man.

I was actually worrying about this sort of thing the other day. I thought to myself that I would have to change my method of memories.
But what do we all really know?

There was no early warning of this.
It is a FREE service.
It is CONSTANTLY getting new information and pictures.

It COULD be that the system is being converted to one that will allow easier uploads, so it will be temporarily down during the potential "upgrade"

I am not holding my breath.
-Simon-

P.S.
For some reason, my apostrophe, arrow keys, and slash keys do not work in this dialog_s box. It goes directly to "quick find". The shift versions work perfectly fine.)

MocPages is a totally different website that used Brickshelf as a way to show the pictures. With Brickshelf going down, the only thing that happens to MOCpages is that most of the MOCs pictures won't be viewable. Besides that, there are other photo sharing/storage websites that MocPages uses, so not everything would go down.

Well, there ARE people who did give donations...
I think they should have been given a warning, at least... and seeing that they didn't, I think, well, I believe that this is temoporary...

Personally, if I was Kevin and I read all the Bantha Poodoo that some members on Lugnet are throwing at him right now, I would intentionally and permanently erased all their galleries to teach them a lesson.

Seriously, it is a shame how some of them are reacting. Instead of criticizing and whining, we all should try and work toward a solution to try to save this pillar of the online LEGO community. Brickshelf has its flaws, but it is still a reference for any serious online LEGO fan, whether adult, teen or child.

IMHO, the lost of Brickshelf would (will) be devastating for this hobby that we love.

EDIT : Well, for all of you that are complaining about the lost of your precious pictures, it seems that deeplinks are still working, as I can see many signatures pics here that are normally hosted on Brickshelf. So if you can remember the path to your pictures (the exact address ending with a .jpg for example), you can still probably save them on your hard drive.

David, as I said earlier it's more likely you're seeing the cache of your computer. I'm saying this because some of the deeplikns that I have in my other board were dieing slowly, so I had to back up few things into Flickr...

Lucky I only was using Brickshelf since January. Brickshelf sorta works if you follow the link I posted but not all features work.

While it does work somewhat, it feels more like I'm attending an open-casket funeral.

Alright guys, thanks to Lowlead's discovery in my other board, if you happen to have the BS links saved, you can access them by putting an "s" right after "http", so it suppose to look like this: https://addressblahblahblah... It should work. Wink

i have been furiously downloading since darkie provided the work-around. i am especially going after the mecha designs by the japanese builders because i am not sure the japanese builders are as integrated in the afol community.

good luck with the downloading. i am sure many people are going at it.

EDIT: doh! did i speak too soon? adding the 's' to http... does not seem to be working anymore.

It is a shame how some people are reacting, but I personally don't see how anyone can help if Kevin doesn't seem to be willing to ask for help. He simply shut down the site without any warning that he may have needed help even keeping Brickshelf up temporarily to allow users to back up files and such. There have been offers to help already on LUGNET and I'm sure those offers would have been made had there been warning that Brickshelf was in danger of shutting down. That being said, I'm still grateful for all that Brickshelf has given to the LEGO community over the years and wish no ill will on Kevin.

I'm just one of the lucky few that never throws anything away. I still have all the pictures I uploaded to brickshelf, as well as a vast majority of the ones I had downloaded.

I admit it, I'm a packrat. When I see an image on the net I like, I tend to save it - since the web is a rather ephemeral thing.

Case in point - brickshelf.

i wish kevin no ill whatsoever. he has provided a remarkable venue for showing off lego creations and helping builders be inspired. brickshelf will be sorely missed.

i am not sure if this is correct, but didn't lego help in some direct or indirect way to brickshelf? i am not sure why i have that in my head. if it is a financial reason that brickshelf folded, i think this would be a great opportunity for a company like lego to take over. my interest in the hobby is fueled way more by what i see on brickshelf than by any advertising that lego does.

anyways, i hope you guys were able to download some stuff before the site completely was shut down. i got some files, but not nearly enough. let's keep our fingers crossed that this is not completely over.

I've not posted here for quite a long while now, but I still would visit Brickshelf from time to time, if only to catch up on some of the great MOCs. I feel terrible for the folks who used the site as their main source of storage (though this will hopefully serve as a lesson to maintain backups of anything and everything they deem worthy)...and I'm also a bit perplexed as to the manner in which the site "went down".

There is a chance that this is only temporary, so I'm not going to instantly start yelling and cursing -- I too wish no ill will on anyone -- but it does seem odd that just a short time after the "backdoor" (https://www.brickshelf...) was found, it too "went down".

Hopefully we'll see resolution to this one way or the other. Until then, let's try to stay as positive as we can.

Im new to the whole AFOL community- thing so I have not taken a single pic of my mocs and uploaded them to the internets yet. However I did use BS as a source of inspiration and I am sad to see it go.

you know since MAJ is still online, I would wonder if he'd be consolidating the two sites possibly?

Why run two when you can run one?

Maybe it's a far out hope... but it could happen.
