Exactly. I could now start saving all my favourite galleries, but that makes no sense, we need a dedicated lego creations site.

I suppose we could form such a site, but bandwidth issues... costly indeed. We could save some by not allowing bitmaps and overly large pictures.

A guy claiming to be Kevin claims that the website will be replaced by a new one but there have been some snags. So hopefully this is actually him and it will actually happen.

I was just about posting this link too.
Would be too great if this would be true.

anyone know how much it costs to keep it running?

is that the situation? cost or time?

wonder if they'd be interested in turning over the management of the site to one of us.

Heck, save other people's creations you think are good! Razz

Yay, it's open for a while. Hopefully someone else will take it over, or make a similar thing on a different domain.

Daz,

Thank you for responding to my comments. I only disagree with you a little, and I'm glad to see your point of view.
Daz Hoo wrote:

Yeah, did you accidentally lose dozens of irreplaceable pics?
Nope, because I'm cautious enough to have backups of all my important stuff. Like others pointed out, backing up your own files should be your responsability.
Neither did I lose my MOCs, BTW. For those that made the mistake though, imagine what a shock it is. I'd rather cut them slack, even if they don't deserve it.
Daz Hoo wrote:

I'm sorry, but thousands of pictures just disappeared. Is it too much to ask to tolerate some people reacting with sarcasm and humor?
But what I read on LUGnet looked more like a public lynching of Kevin (and Brickshelf) than sarcastic and humoristic comments...
Point taken. I haven't read the whole thread, and I don't plan to for exactly that reason. When it sounds like spam, I don't pay attention.
Daz Hoo wrote:
My grandmother use to say : "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." I don't expect everyone to come up with a solution, nor to be able to help out. But, like you pointed out, whining publicly about it or posting things like "It's typical of Kevin to do this" or "Thanks to Loch, I lost most of MY MOCs" is not going to help the situation in any way.

So why do it? Why do some feel the need to drag someone's name in the mud without knowing all the facts?

Seriously, IMHO, that's the kind of attitude that is slowly but surely killing LUGnet.
It only takes a few bad apples, but I like to think communities are more resilient than they seem.

So, even though it's been said more than enough, great thanks to Kevin Loch for giving us two weeks.

Oh I will, believe me. Funny thing about this internet, in the end. We get used to so much information being there when we really know little about where it comes from.

Backup Utility for BrickShelf
Here are links in case anyone doesn't know about this way to download your pictures.

http://www.bzpower.com/downloads/BSBackup_0013.zip
http://www.fial.com/bob/partscatalog/download/BSBackup_0013.zip

Andi Can you add these links to a BrickShelf backup utility to your top post?

And just so we don't have to go there:

Hi everyone! I joined here to try to be in touch with the community throughout this process. Sorry there was not more notice. I was hoping to have this up and running by the end of BrickShelf but I've encountered a few snags. ~ Kevin

If the quote I found is true, we may get a new BrickShelf interface which is a happy thing. It may become a premium service like Flickr!, but that is not such a bad thing. If he was trying to surprise, I wish that he didn't use the heart attack method.

Sorry to hear the download problem, Andi. I just got all mine without a hitch by running from the Command Prompt.

It works now. Strangely it does not like c:\ as destination folder but now I choose another folder and it works.

I wonder why Kevin choose Eurobricks for posting this.

Should we start a thread of saved folders that we'll share?

It would be cool to have DVD's of favorite pictures. Maybe we could make Torrent's of favorite photos from a year.

I appreciate him deciding to put the site back up and give folks time to backup. But I'm still very disappointed he's not giving us an explanation as to why it's going away.

the backup utilities outlined by Battle Angel Alita are fantastic. to think i was right-clicking on images furiously yesterday until brickshelf.com went down again. now this utility is doing all of the work. man, what will technology do for us next? put a man on the moon? (dumb and dumber reference)

It's a sad day...Brickshelf was one of my favorite sites to look for inspriation, or if I was just board and had time to kill. Thanks for posting the BSBackup link...that's saving me hours downloading hundreds of images back to my computer. Smile

Well, hopefull a worthy alternative will come up in Brickshelf's ashes.
