Well, I couldn't find an old thread for Life on Mars so I assume nobody's talked about this on here before. Anyway, who's watching Ashes to Ashes which started on Thursday? Do you think it will be as good as Life on Mars? I loved Sam Tyler's story and I'm sure Alex Drake's will be just as brilliant. _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

Anyone else think we should have a thread devoted purely to English TV...
I never watched LoM, I'm sure it was good but I was never hooked by the little I saw, same goes for what I've seen so far of AtA.
Plus, I don't want to get addicted to another TV series. My most recent fix is 24. Put that along with House, CSI, Prison Break, Lost, Desperate Housewives, etc, and I already watch too much television... _________________

Only if we streamline all the American shows to an American TV thread. _________________ Sometimes I Quack Myself Up... |

Even better, let's limit all Americans to posting in an American thread. _________________

That's not fair!
Anyhow, since it's a BBC thing, we might get it on BBC America. Hopefully... |

LoM was excellent, but AtA just looks to be exactly the same except for a female lead character who actually knows where she is. And it's set in the Eighties. _________________ Neeeoowwwwwww |

Well, episode 2 was much better. Getting into it now. Also, good SFX for the explosion. _________________ Neeeoowwwwwww |

Did anyone see last week's episode? I thought Shaz was gone for good after she got stabbed and briefly died. I'm glad she survived. _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

Yup, last one tomorrow. Wonder if it'll be in multiple series like LoM or they'll just end it now... _________________ Neeeoowwwwwww |

I hope it does get a 2nd series, I think it's got enough steam to go that far. I mean, they haven't really explained what's actually going on - is it just a comatose dreamlike delusion, or something more spiritual?
They've set it up nicely for a season finale, with Alex (saving/not saving) her parents, but what happens then?
If it does get canned, at least they have proven that you can still make a decent 70s/80s cop show! |

Well, last night's explosive end was brilliant. The plot kept making you wonder if Evan was the one who was going to plant the bomb under the car, or maybe Layton but no, it was actually Alex's father -> Tim Price. What was even more freaky was the fact that as Tim took his glasses off and briefly rested his eyes while sitting in the car with his wife (Alex's mum), he turned into the clown that had been tormenting Alex throughout the episodes. Oh....my....God.
What happens next? He winks at Alex and the bomb detonates. What follows is probably one of the best explosions in television histoy. It's in slow motion, it's silent, it's high definition. Each flame ignites from within and the car is torn to bits. It's horribly tragic but you can't help but go "Whoa" and enjoy the special effects.
Excellent series. Bring on series 2. _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

From The Daily Telegraph.
Ashes to Ashes given second series by BBC
Ashes to Ashes, the cop drama set in the 1980s - starring Philip Glenister and Keeley Hawes, has been recommissioned by the BBC for a second series. The first series of the show, which reached its final episode yesterday, has pulled in up to seven million viewers for BBC1 - making it the most successful drama series launch of 2008.
The show was widely predicted to be a success after the huge popularity of its predecessor, Life on Mars, which saw Sam Tyler - a policeman from 2006, played by John Simm - stuck in 1973.
Glenister, whose iconic character Gene Hunt has been central to both Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, said: "We'll start shooting a second series sometime in August. They've got an option for up to a third series. But you tend to get an instinct about when something should finish. And I certainly wouldn't want to drag it on and on. The character's too good for that. I care about the character too much." _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

Possibly the Coolest Free Thing Ever?
If you don't own Life on Mars (Series 1 and 2) on DVD, Gene Hunt should have the right to hunt you down and lock you up! How can you call yourself a "fan" and not have this in your DVD collection?
Well, thanks to the News of the World newspaper, this award winning BBC series is now being given away for free starting today! Over the next 8 weeks, collect all 8 discs to journey with Sam Tyler through 1973's Manchester. What are you waiting for? Got and get your first disc now before I dial for the Guv.

Are you guys aware that ABC has a series called Life on Mars which appears to be an American version of the original British show? I haven't watched it myself, but it does sound interesting. _________________ With common principles to the next level - Brrraaaaaaaaaiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnss........ |

I have. It sounds like a 2D version of the original - none of the characters appear to have the depth they had before. _________________

Same here. I never imagined it would be given away with a newspaper. I'm guessing this has been done to generate interest for Series 2 of Ashes to Ashes which is coming soon.

I was reading about it on Wikipedia today. I can't say I'm interested. I saw a clip of it the night it was broadcast in America. Good heavens, it was like watching the Pilot episode of the American version of Dad's Army. By that, I mean it was a painful experience. _________________ FBTB: The Final Chapter

Just watched some clips - its way too much like the UK version. Kinda Gus Van Sant's Psycho to Hitch's. I mean, they even have the same forest visions that run through the first series.
Plus, the US Gene is just utter rubbish. _________________

The whole "dude gets zapped to the 70s and hangs out with cops" is an interesting premise...and I never frown on a Bowie reference. _________________ Hail Brains!
