I'll be happy so long as I can own a house, not have a mortgage, have an okay car, or a nicer bicycle, and still have lots left to maybe support a family and definitely feed my addiction to LEGO and video games.

If I could pay my bills, save for my retirement and my daughter's education, go to dinner once in a great while and take a trip abroad every two or three years, that would be plenty.

Total home income for me - $100,000.

We were right there for quite a while, then the wife lost her job (thanks, economy!). She's looking, but we'll be OK. Not saving for retirement/education right now, though, and that stinks.

I think that unless you have kids, 50,000 dollars a year is about all anyone would need. (Excluding uber expensive areas like New York city) That's enough to be able to make house payments and gradually save for retirement if you wanted to. With kids, I suppose you'd want to make about 10 to 15 thousand more a year per child to cover your bases.

Yeah, except most jobs that pay in that range also require a college education, and those bills suck. Add on a car payment, normal costs, and 50k per year seems a lot less than you'd think...

Seriously, though, my honest answer would probably be "As much as I can make while still doing something I enjoy." I'm hoping to be a professor of chemical engineering after I earn my doctorate in a few years, which has an average starting salary of about $75,000 -- so I'm gonna be pretty comfortable.

Can doesn't mean will, and you'll get more at a private company than you would teaching in most fields. Also, it's a different industry so there are probably a few factors for the pay difference. /Captain Obvious.

Walp, after reviewing actual data instead of pulling numbers out of my patootie, it looks like a chem eng professor starts closer to 100k than 75k. Mah bad.

Half of the professors in my department (even here at the University of Arizona, which isn't what you'd call a prestigious school) are making over $150k.

Incomes never really mattered to me. I'm in college just so I can have a job I can live on independly and doesn't have anything to do with food or cleaning.

That said, Computer Science BS entry-level seems to have an average of $40000 to $50000 a year, which is enough for me.

I figure a small used mobile home, $5000 land rental, $250 mo. (Price quoted to me by a friend who paid as much).
and $6000 for a new Vespa should be good for the first few years while I pay off my college debts. Buy Lego and anime, and save the rest for my Lamborghini Countach. If I stay single living should be inexpensive

I'd be comfortable on around £40,000 a year, but ideally I'd like to be sitting on £60,000+ as it would mean I could afford to put money aside, build up savings in a decent way and so on. I'm just out of university, so starting to work my way up the career tree.

Any salary that could provide for me to live on. Nothing extravagant, just one that heats the house, gets the bills paid, and puts food on the table. And at one point will hopefully be able to support a family also.

In my experience, salary is only a small part of the equation when it comes to work. Benefits, such as insurance and a retirement plan, and job security are equally if not more important as your income.

I mean, what good is a $150 K per year salary if you're going to be out of work every two or three years? What good is that salary if you get really sick that you can't even work, or end up living on social security once you retire because you didn't save for your retirement?

Also, yes, a $300 K per year income seams nice, but if you work 60 to 70 hours a week for that, what good does it do? Sure, you'll have nice material things, but you won't be able to enjoy them. And mostly, you won't have time to spend with your kids, and being a dad, I can't figure out why anyone would want to sacrifice that.

If I can pay the mortgage, have enough food on the table & still have a little left over to buy interesting stuff, I'd be happy ... just so long as the work is interesting & stimulating, and the people I work with aren't complete conniving **** ******.

If I hate the work & people, then I'd want a shed-load more money to make it worthwhile getting up in the morning.

So the answer is, as with so much in life, "it depends".
