This will be of interest to all those UFO believers out there. There are so many of them, I can't remember who studies what but I once heard some American say: "The Greys are us in the future. They have superior technology and cloaking devices for their saucers." I suppose this "deflector shield" will be added to the list of gadgets the Greys have.  Then again, the UFO people may just say "We already knew they had those." 
While I'm here, if those "Greys" do exist - surely they take offence to what the small unimportant earthlings have named them? Abit racist don't you think?

Back on topic, I knew it was only a matter of time before something like this would be invented. It's a shame that this technology requires 15-20 more years of experiments before it has a practical use, however.

You're all missing the point. Silly UFO nutters claim that the "aliens" have technology beyond our imagination and that they come from the future (via time travel). If said technology gets invented now, then this is the start of its development. In so many hundred years time, technology may/may not be highly advanced.

No, you're missing the point that a) UFOs are irrelevant here, and 2) no one cares.
Anyways, since they seem to have the ray shielding in the works, they need to work on a particle shield to go along with it. All the radiation protection in the world isn't going to matter if some space dust or micro meteorites tear into the craft. So we've still got a ways to go before some hardcore space traveling...

| Ray shields protect against energy, radiation, that sort of thing. Particle shields are supposed to deflect physical matter (see the bit I was editing in about space dust and such). I thought you were supposed to be a bit of a sci-fi geek dude! |

Solid particles (rocks, micrometeorites, etc.) as opposed to energy particles (x-rays, gamma rays, etc.) |

This technology is pretty cool, but I have one little question in the back of my mind. Why can’t they do the same thing using magnetic fields? Isn’t that the way the earth deflects most of the solar radiation already? I think it would be a technology that we are a bit more familiar with, and would come to a practical use much faster.

Wow, I’m a complete tard. Even though I read this, with all the talk of photons, rays, particles and UFOs, I started thinking this was about plasma fields. Apparently, I’m easily distracted.
Well then this should be put into application quicker than 20-30 years. I watched a Modern Marvels were the made a small frog defy gravity with powerful magnets. The little guy just floated there in the cylinder like he was doing a mini-space walk. I would think that deflecting photons would be easier than that. Plus the quicker it gets done, the faster we make it over the myriad of other problems for farther human space exploration.
