I've been out of touch with MOCing of any sorts for more than half a year now, so my return is marked with a not-so-impressive alternate model of the Imperial Dropship battle pack. Unlike how I normally challenge myself to, I did not use all the pieces. I've always had a love for alt models so, with a lot of experimentation, I ended up with an Imperial version of my CLAS speeder. Apparently my Flickr account malfunctioned so I can't get you a picture of that now, but without further blabber:

Enjoy and comments and constructive criticism appreciated as always.

Well, I know you only had limited pieces and such to work with, but when I think speeder, I think of something a bit.. sleeker. And again, I know you only had a few parts to work with. Personally, I doubt I could have done better, but anyways.

The front slope looks a bit abrupt. that's the main thing that sticks out to me.

The rear section of the model is good, I like how you used the technics as the gun holders.

Over-all, good for being an alternate model, but it wouldn't be so great if it was anything but.

JLDAGH covered pretty much it all. The unsleekness of the front and the empty-lookingness (is that even a word?) seem to be the largest problems. The rear, on the other hand, does look neat, being both pretty sleek and technic-looking.

To improve the design, I think you should abandon the idea of a transport speeder; the craft is way too small for that. One pilot might really be enough. I also think that you should totally remake the front and try to make it sleek or - if sleekness is impossible - even aerodynamic-looking. If nothing else, there could be some "claws" of some sort sticking out forwards.

All in all, as JLDAGH said, quite nice-looking alternate model but otherwise pretty weak. However, I'd really recommed rebuilding and improving the creation; the rear design is too wicked to be wasted and I'm really curious to see what kinds of new front designs you could come up with. Smile

Thank you for your honest and very helpful comments. I'm very out of touch with my MOCing now, so do forgive me. Taking all of your comments into consideration, I've rebuilt the entire thing, using once again only pieces in the Imperial Dropship set. Aiming for a mixture sleekness and some beef, I've heavily altered the back but the essence is hopefully still there. I'm not fully satisfied, but I hope it's an improvement.

PS some photos of the earlier version have been deleted, but I've left around 4 for comparison purposes.

Yep, it's definately an improvement. The nose looks a lot better, and the overall design is now sturdier and less fragile-looking.

However, I liked the previous rear better, for the current one is quite bulky-looking. The first version had some airyness and fast-lookingness in it.
I'm neither a big fan of the openness of the seat part. I think it'd need something to its sides, not necessarily on the whole lenght of it, but something. Something so that it wouldn't look like the troops might fall at the first bend.

A second redesign, perhaps? Wink

I appreciate the comments, and understand where you're coming from. But really, it's a catch 22: it's really either one or the other, with the pieces that I have, a new front has to mean a different back. The pieces that come with that set are extremely unconventional and it's so hard to fulfill all the requirements. I was really trying to do a bad guy version of the CLAS speeder. Do you suggest I perhaps tackle a one-man speeder instead?

The new design is quite an improvement, the front is looking much better, and the back doesn't look to bad either.

One-man speeder instead would probably be a good idea. It'll just make the building a bit easier I reckon, since you'll only need room for a single mini-fig.

Yes, one-man speeder would be best, considering the very limited bricks.

In addition, if you have to decide between a nice-looking front and a nice-looking rear, I'd recommend choosing the front, for that's usually the most visible part of speeders and the part which people first look at.

"A nice-looking rear"....

That aside, both of you have really valid points. I'm not feeling too well, so I might want to put off working on that for a while. I was quite adamant in building a three-man speeder because I wanted a craft that could hold the minifigs. Now, I understand. My brother additionally suggests that a two-man speeder might be feasible as well.

Okay, here is the third rebuild. I think now it looks a lot more solid, but a little more blocky.

I shan't post the image here, because DonSolo locked another thread because I did so. Don, forgive me, I've been out of touch with the ways of the forum for way too long.

Indeed. Although it isn't as dynamic as the second version, it's definately improvement on the whole.
The rear is looking great (again Wink), especially with the guns on. Nose doesn't look bad, either, though the grey bricks on the ailerons do look slightly odd for some reason. Not disturbingly, though. However, how would the look change if you took them off or switched their position a little bit (e.g. bend them to point backward)?

All in all, neat improvement, and pretty darn great work with so few bricks. Smile

Jedd your speeder gave me inspiration to build my own Very Happy. I used most of the pieces and it can switch between 2 and 3 seated. But since I do not have pics I cant show you. Also yours is great. My favorite is the third one. Well Thanks for building that and inspiring me Smile.
